Why burn firewood?
- Firewood is the best source of renewal energy to use to heat your home.
- Burning firewood doesn’t release any more harmful greenhouse gases than if it lay on the forest floor and rotted.
- Firewood burns at such high BTU’s that it’s actually more efficient at heating your home than gas, oil, coal or wood pellets.
How much firewood should be stored indoors?
- Only a two or three day supply.
- Burning wood that has been taken directly from outdoors will cool down your fire too much.

What is unseasoned wood?
Unseasoned or “green” wood is wood that hasn’t had enough time to dry out all its’ moisture content. If you burn green wood, it will smoke profusely as it releases its’ moisture and gases. Green wood also releases less heat because the moisture lowers the temperature of the flames and creates steam. It also damages your chimney because the steam contains chemicals that not only build up inside your chimney, but are very flammable and can create chimney fires. Here at Santa Fe Ecowood, we guarantee all of our wood is seasoned properly for the best heating and burning experience. Many roadside vendors that sell inexpensive firewood are not selling well-seasoned wood.
How do I store my firewood?
The best way to store firewood is at least 30 feet away from your home or building, off the ground, in full sunlight and covered with clear plastic to create a “greenhouse” effect. This method stops bugs and bark beetles from living in and off your wood. It also helps maintain the woods dryness.

Here at Santa Fe Ecowood, we will do everything possible to get your wood to you as quickly as possible. We suggest ordering as early in the fall as possible as we tend to book up very quickly, particularly November through January.
What is the average length of your wood?
We cut our firewood at 16” to ensure it fits perfectly into fireplaces and wood burning stoves. We do take special orders for different sizes.
Do you charge extra for stacking my order?

I have a holiday home in Santa Fe but live in Texas, can you help me?

Some of the trees on my property have come down; could you come & make them into logs for me?
Of course. Drop us a line with as many details as you can & we'll give you a price and instructions on how long to allow it to season.
How can I tell if firewood is ready to burn?
Firewood generally is considered suitable for burning once it reaches a moisture content of 20% or less. 15% is ideal, and you would be hard pressed to find firewood much dryer. You need to rely on visual clues to determine if your firewood is suitable for burning.
Seasoned wood will have checked or cracked ends. Often times the bark will separate easily from the wood. It may have a grey, weathered appearance, but not if it has been stored under cover. If you knock two pieces together it should sound hollow, instead of dense.

Do you sell firewood all year long?
Yes, we sell firewood all year long because we keep a good supply for summer activities such as campfires and chimineas.
How Much Do I Need?
If you use your firewood throughout the entire day for five months during the winter season, it's likely you will need 1 ½ cords. If you only use your firewood in the evenings during that five-month span, a cord will be sufficient. And, if you only use your fireplace a few days during the week or for special occasions, a ½ cord should be good.
What does "locally and sustainably harvested firewood" mean?
Unlike most firewood on the market today, as much as possible of our firewood is sustainably harvested from forest and watershed restoration projects in New Mexico. These forest restoration projects are conducted in association with the U.S Forest Service and in collaboration with various environmental, watershed and wildlife advocacy groups. These projects serve to remove fuels, reduce catastrophic wildfire threats to communities, restore watersheds and still leave healthier forests in a more natural state. We also utilize timber and dead forest biomass remaining from these restoration projects, that would otherwise be burned as slash or left on the forest floor as clutter, into an eco-friendly and naturally-renewable firewood product to heat your home.
How is firewood measured?
Santa Fe EcoWood sells firewood in a number of different quantities: $50 loads, 1/4 cord, 1/2 cord and 1 full cord. 1 full cord of firewood is the legally defined measurement for firewood. 1 cord describes the volume of wood and is equal to 128 cu. ft. It is usually measured as 4'x4'x8' when it is stacked well. Knowing how much firewood is in a cord of wood will help ensure you are actually getting the amount of wood you are paying for.
What should I consider when deciding to purchase firewood?
Is it dry?
Wood that has recently been cut is referred to as "green wood". When purchasing firewood, it is important to ensure that the wood is fully dry or "seasoned". Wood that has been recently cut will have a greater moisture content. When burning green wood, considerable energy is wasted in drying the wood before it actually burns. Burning green wood will also result in a lot of smoke and creosote. Dry wood will burn much easier and more efficiently.

How much firewood do I need?
It is important to find out exactly how much firewood you are purchasing. Often times what is referred to a "truckload" is significantly less than a true full cord. If you are only making fires on weekends, 1/4 - 1/2 cord may be adequete for you your needs. For someone who burns on a daily basis throughout the winter, we would recommend order 1 full cord of wood.
How has the wood been stored?
Improperly stored wood can result in unwanted moisture and rot. Wood is best stored about 10 ft. from your house to minimize pests and insects in your home. Firewood should be stored at least 6 inches from the ground, with the bark side facing up to help shed rain. A 2-3 day supply of firewood should be kept inside your house. Wood that is brought in from outside is often too cold to result in proper combustion when starting a fire.
